UPDATE: Loudoun County students planning politically inspired walkout
Thursday, Feb. 9, 2017 by Chantalle Edmunds
Students at seven high schools in Loudoun County are planning to stage a walkout Friday afternoon. ... Organizers say it is to protest President Donald Trump's executive order pertaining to travel and immigration and Trump's selection of Betsy DeVos the new education secretary.
The walkout has been primarily organized by Muslim students, although organizers say they are expecting a diverse range of students to take part. It is slated to take place at 2.30 p.m. Miss India USA will be a guest speaker at one of the schools.
Loudoun County Public Schools have issued a statement saying "high school principals are aware of a potential student walkout," warning that activities that disrupt instruction are against School Board policy, "regardless of the cause or viewpoint of those taking part."
The LCPS statement goes on to detail how principals have met with student organizers to develop plans to ensure safety procedures are followed if students leave the building. Those planning to be involved in the walkout have also been warned they face the usual discipline involved with being tardy or skipping class.
