Children in unlicensed day cares are 5 times more likely to die

The tragic death of a Midlothian toddler in a fire at a home day care is indicative of a deadly, statewide trend: Children being watched in unlicensed facilities in Virginia are five times more likely to die of physical abuse, neglect or even sudden unexplained infant death than children in state-regulated homes.

At least 51 children died in day care facilities unregulated by Virginia over the past 10 years, compared with only nine in day care operations licensed and regulated by the Virginia Department of Social Services, according to agency data obtained through the Freedom of Information Act and on its website and analyzed by the Richmond Times-Dispatch.

Nine children died in unregulated day-care homes in Virginia in 2014, making it the deadliest year for such homes in the past decade, according to a Washington Post analysis. Six children died in sleep-related incidents, and three died in fires at two homes that had no working smoke detectors and were over capacity.
