Texas is Scaring Me

This evening I was sitting in my home office which faces the street where my car is parked. The window was open as it is a cool breezy evening. I live in a working class suburban neighborhood in Dallas and have been here for 24 years. I heard a load rumbling come down the street and then what sounded like a gun shot, I just knew that someone had shot at my car. I asked my husband to go out and look with me and yes, someone had indeed shot at my car, there were pieces of glass all over the street. There are lots of cars parked in the street but mine is the only one with Obama bumper stickers and my yard is the only one with a sign...is this what it's come to? What is really scary is that I was sitting right there with the window wide open, they could have shot me. I am so ANGRY right now. I guess I'll have to take off my bumper stickers otherwise, how can I know that they won't just shoot me while I am driving? This is freaking me out. Everyone seems so angry, especially at work. The tension is horrible. Is anyone else feeling it?

I would never sport political bumperstickers in this Gun Nut Hell. Glad you are OK.

5. If I ever get control of this country......

I would require that all political signs (and bumper stickers) be removed within 48 hours of the end of an election. I am still seeing Bush/Cheney bumper stickers on cars. When an election is over, it is time to move forward. Sorry to read of your experience.

9. So I guess you're not so cool with that pesky First Amendment, eh?

Why would you want to solve the problem by telling people they can't express their views ON THEIR OWN PRIVATE PROPERTY??

We're very fortunate that YOU are never going to get control of the country like you wish.

16. Yes, it's her fault for having a bumper sticker.

I imagine that if you ever "got control" of this country, we'd have a whole host of other interesting things to worry about.

27. No need to worry

I am as progressive as they come. Hopefully, the rest of America is starting to catch on. Conservatives are hard-pressed to name anything of substance they have done for the country. Liberals can point to so many things: voting rights for women, voting rights for blacks, end of segregated schools, social security, medicare, medicaid, etc.

7. Hope you called the police....BTW-WELCOME!!! And boy what a 1st post...

Yeah its better to remove the stickers & signage...Not worth what one idiot can do out of rage & stupidity-

My sister lives in that kneck of the woods so to speak-I get that the locals are not too happy but thats scary stupid...

And they are never angry at the right people-wish they would wise up & realize they have been lied to all this time. Then they can have someone actually worthy of the anger.

Welcome to DU!!

8. Yes, a total stranger started yelling at us

I am so sorry this happened to you, please be careful. it is very dangerous here in Texas.

Yesterday at a restaurant in South Texas, a total stranger interupted our breakfast screaming that Obama was getting a national police force with the healthcare bill. When my husband told him that maybe he should be concerned with the Patriot Act instead of our private conversation he went crazy, screaming " have you read it" over and over, then my bil sitting with us said, well Hillary just signed a treaty with the United Nations to take our guns, I lost it and screamed in my right wing evangelical bil face, " you are so full of shit", I got up and went and sat in the truck, thinking maybe my dh would be embarrassed, but he came out and got in the truck and told me he was proud of me. But I actually looked around for somebody maybe with a gun aimed at us...

10. At least since 2000 I've been hearing people express fear

that they can't have a bumper sticker on their car for fear of reprisals of some kind. With all due respect, Texas is not itself the problem. The problem is the attitude on the part of way too many people that someone else's public expression is something to be repressed.

And maybe too many guns.

15. Not here in Ohio...

I went out drinking tonight, and I wore my small Obama "forward" button as my subtle way of gloating. No reaction at all from the drunken republibots.

If someone took a shot at your car, they have real issues with sorting out the propaganda Fox and AM radio is programming. I even asked one conservative if Obama stopped by yet to pick up his gun. I chuckled and told him they're probably going alphabetically. I got a laugh.

What you're seeing is a hate crime.

17. And to think a Republican I know left the country for the election,....

....because he assumed Romney would win and black people would riot.

Instead, Obama wins and white people are becoming terrorists.

20. We had 3 sets of yard signs stolen and my car keyed...

But no gunshots, thank god.
I'm installing a deer camera with night vision for the next campaign. I've talked to my local prosecutor's office here in Ohio and they will make the arrest if we can get a license number.

Please consider moving North if this continues. We need courageous people like you in our communities and our unions and progressive organizations are more than capable of pushing back against these cowardly bullies.

21. That's very scary. I live in southeast Texas

Friends have told me that they worry about me because of the bumperstickers on my car, but I've never noticed so much as a dirty look.

I work in a chemical research facility, so most of the people around me are well-educated and ostensibly intelligent, but the vast majority are die-hard republicans. I've heard one of them chide another for watching a news source other than Fox News. Many of them are decent, compassionate people...I don't understand how they remain loyal to their party. Texas is an odd place, to say the least.

22. Thanks Everyone

I guess it just never occurred to me that I was making myself a target just by supporting my candidate although in retrospect, it probably should have. I did report it to the police, they came by the house at 2:45 this morning and took a report. Upon further inspection you could definitely see that it was a bullet that hit the car. Of course there wasn't anything I could tell the police that might help them to catch this person so they will get away with it. I am going to take off my bumper stickers today although it breaks my heart to have to do that; I am especially fond of my Women for Obama sticker. My daughter drives my car from time to time and the thought of something happening to her because of my bumper stickers is too horrible to think about.

Thanks to everyone for your kind words. Although I have followed DU since the beginning (I have changed my user name a couple times) I don't post much (introvert here) but I don't know what I would do without it, I am probably somewhat addicted to it. When this happened last night, after I got over the shock the first thing I wanted to do was share it with my fellow DU Texans, I knew you all would offer words of encouragement and you did, thank you so very much.

24. I've lived in Texas for 30 years

and I've never advertised that I'm a Dem unless I am absolutely certain I'm in the company of another Dem. Sad, but there's too much bat-shit crazy down here. And what's really scary is that so many men here believe that once a woman has "crossed the line" and put herself in a "man's place" it's okay to accost her as they would another man.

So, during election cycles, if I see your yard or your car do not advertise support for a candidate, I assume you're a Dem. It makes me feel better.

I'm glad you are okay.

26. I'm sorry you endured that.

A couple days ago, I tried to point out that the Rethugs are going to be unhinged, and will turn violent. I was told to relax, they're all talk. I pointed out how many have turned violent already, abortion clinic bombings, targeted assassinations of abortion providers, The bombing of the Atlanta Olympics. Then I asked how many RW militia's and cults had been broken up by the FBI in the nick of time. I asked about the Sovereign Citizens.

Your experience, while terrifying, and causing you anger, is a neon warning sign. We must take those nuts seriously. We must take action to limit and minimize their ability to do harm. The first Amendment is designed to protect speech, not someone threatening someone else. We must act to make sure no one else suffers what you have. We must begin by taking our enemy seriously, because while some of us understand the dangers posed by the RW, far too many believe they are just talk, and that attitude will see us all become victims.

We must stop them before the bullets become firebombs through your window.

28. I agree completely

Those of us who lived through the 60's know what they're capable of. They are dangerous and irrational. This hate is viral and there are many weak minded people who are infected.

Be safe.

In time, if we work hard, we will be safer to express ourselves in this country but at the moment it's best to recognize they will stop at nothing.

31. Well, I really don't want to start this controversy,

but like a lot of Texas Democrats, I'm a Second Amendment supporter. Not because I'm in favor of gun ownership, because if we could outlaw them I would be the first to vote for it, but like the Cold War, if the Russians got nukes, we gotta have em too. We Democrats have to live in reality too, and as long as the 2nd Amendment is part of the COTUS that is not gonna change. If this situation with the more-and-more marginalized and shrinking Right Wing Nut Job Contingency gets progressively worse, buy a firearm and learn how to use it. I suggest the Smith and Wesson AR-15 sold in any Academy store, they are affordable at $800 and are standard military caliber. A 12 gauge pump shotgun is also a fine close-range self defense weapon, like the Mossberg sold at the same place for less than $200.

30. Part of the deal in Texas

I've had similar experiences here, it is pretty much a truth in this state that if you do not want your car vandalized, don't put a Democratic sticker on it. I am sorry this happened to you, I hope they get caught.
