State Rep. Elliott Naishtat, who has represented a liberal swath of Austin for a quarter-century, wont run for re-election after all.
After indicating last week that he wouldnt run but then saying earlier this week that he would, the 70-year-old Democrat announced Thursday that he is withdrawing his name from the ballot.
Naishtats departure has set off a flurry of last-minute politicking before the candidate filing deadline, which is Monday.
Naishtat called several people who might be interested in his seat to tell them about his decision. The list of potential Democratic candidates is long and growing: Austin school board President Gina Hinojosa, legislative aide Huey Rey Fischer, University of Texas law professor Heather Way, defense attorney Matt Shrum, lobbyist and neighborhood activist Marco Mancillas and political consultant Fred Cantu. Austin City Council Member Ann Kitchen and political consultant Katie Naranjo, who had considered running, said Thursday they wont get in the race.

I met Elliott Naishtat a couple of times when I lived in Austin and he was my representative. He was one of the few liberal holdouts that Democrats had in the Texas House and authored many good bills. I hope that he enjoys his retirement.
