Texas prepares for court over voter ID law

Texas prepares for court over voter ID law

WASHINGTON — Texas is preparing for a legal showdown next month in federal court over a new voter photo ID law passed by the Legislature.

The law was blocked by the Justice Department over claims that it discriminates against minority voters.

“We objected to a photo ID requirement in Texas because it would have had a disproportionate impact on Hispanic voters,” U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder explained to a conference of black clergy in a speech about the continued need of protections under the Voting Rights Act.

Despite legal maneuvering by Texas and Justice Department lawyers, a three-judge U.S. District Court panel has cleared the docket for a July 9 trial. And it remains questionable whether the new law can be implemented in Texas by the November general election.

I object as well. I'm right ight there with Eric Holder on this one. go DOJ!

2. You wouldn't believe how many republicants expressed their support during the primaries

"I don't know why anyone would object to voter id's!"

Since I'm an election official I didn't say a word. My counter part should have told one man to shut the f'up. This old wheezer was borderline racist to say the least and very loud, while in line waiting to be signed in and on his way to the voting booth.

My bilingual clerk had a look of horror on her face. That's how bad this guy was.

Well, I too object to voter suppression laws. I certainly hope this goes in our favor, and doesn't rear its ugly head again.

3. Photo ID laws are all about voter suppression

I don't care how the repukes try to spin it. They're simply trying to shave 5-10 percentage points off any general election. They'll do anything to hang onto power.

4. Yep, and yet they are the ones committing voter and election fraud

I believe that IS the only way they can "win" and I also believe that they are well aware of this!

5. If the Repubs ideas were vote-worthy,

they wouldn't have to cheat.

Their attempts at voter suppression says a lot.

7. This will be a fun lawsuit to watch

I have not heard much lately about the discovery fights and if the Texas legislators were allowed to hide behind legislative privilege in their depos. Under the last ruling, the legislators were to be deposed but could raise the legislative privilege issue as to specific questions raised during the deposition.
