Court refuses woman's appeal of 18-year sentence received for mailing ricin-laced letters to Obama
TEXARKANA A federal court in Texarkana recently dismissed a New Boston woman's appeal of the 18-year prison sentence she received for mailing poison-laced letters to President Barack Obama and others.
A docket entry in Shannon Guess Richardson's criminal case in the Texarkana division of the Eastern District of Texas said the appeal was deemed frivolous by the 5th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals.
Richardson, 38, received an 18-year term for creating a biological toxin as part of a plea bargain in the Texarkana division of the Eastern District of Texas. Richardson also was ordered to pay restitution of more than $360,000 for the exhaustive investigation of the case by dozens of local, state and federal agencies.
Defendants who plead guilty typically have few grounds on which to appeal. The lawyer appointed to represent Richardson in the appeal filed a brief stating that he could find no mishandling of the case by the lawyer who represented her or others involved with her case.
