Houston arson suspect reportedly spoke of hatred toward Muslims

A homeless man accused of setting fire to a Muslim community center reportedly told a store clerk that he hated Muslims, according to the Harris County District Attorney's Office.

During Darryl Ferguson's arraignment on charges of arson early Wednesday, prosecutors said police interviewed business owners near the building that caught fire in southeast Houston, said DA spokesman Jeff McShan.

"He told a nearby convenience store clerk that he hated Muslims, they got what they deserved, and things happen for a reason," prosecutor Tiffany Dupree told the magistrate judge during a pre-dawn hearing in the Harris County jail.

The 56-year-old man was charged Monday with arson and told reporters it was an "accident" after he had been arrested.
