John Courage joins race for Texas SenateSan Antonio Express News 3/10/12
Longtime Democratic activist John Courage filed Wednesday to run for state Senate District 25. The district, which includes a chunk of South Austin plus all or parts of Hays, Kendall, Comal, Bexar and Guadalupe counties, is heavily Republican and currently represented by state Sen. Jeff Wentworth. Wentworth is facing a bruising primary race against former Railroad Commissioner Elizabeth Ames Jones and emergency room physician and Tea Party favorite Donna Campbell. Courage said he was inspired to step into the race after listening to a recent candidate's forum. “It was disappointing to me that they didn't address some of the most important needs in the state: education and health care, particularly for children, seniors and Texas women. There needs to be another voice talking about these issues.” John Courage is a wonderful candidate and we would be lucky to have him serve. I wish him the very best.

It looks like the Republican primary for this district involves some big names which means that big money will follow. Meanwhile, the Democrats offer a strong opponent with the strong name ID. After all, which good ol' boy wouldn't vote for a man named "Courage"?
The added benefit goes to the Democratic party as a whole since this race will siphon off funds that may have gone elsewhere. It is good to see John Courage step up to the plate and the Democrats should always run a full slate of candidates. If the Republicans continue down the path of alienating everyone, then a landslide election could cause sweeping change even at the state level. It wasn't long ago that the Texas House was 76-74, wouldn't it be nice to get a majority again at the time when interim maps are thrown out by the Justice Department in DC?

I did some volunteer work for him when he ran for Congress in 2006. He was going to take out Lamar Smith that year. Then the re-re-re-districting happened and they made that district repubublican winner proof.
We got Lloyd Doggett in the re-re-re-districting in Austin, but it really would have been sweet to see John beat Lamar (Lamer) Smith. He really is a very dedicated, progressive candidate.  |

Excellent news. Hopefully his voice will be heard and the "district" will have true representation. They certainly won't have ANY if they vote in any of the GOP field. Good Luck, John! |
