Sierra Club criticizes Port of Corpus Christi for coal plans
CORPUS CHRISTI An environmental group decries the Port of Corpus Christis plans to increase coal exports links the region to a risky economic future that wont create jobs and will have harmful air quality impacts, among other effects.
The Sierra Club claims in a report issued Tuesday that the port and two companies now exporting coal through Corpus Christi are working to create a new terminal with the capacity to move 20 million tons of coal per year through the area by 2017.
The terminal would take up part of the 1,100-acre La Quinta Trade Gateway, against the ports original stated plans of devoting the property to containerized cargo, the group said.
The report blasts the predicted rise in global coal shipments as based on unreliable predictions that demand will rise in Asia. Much of that depends on China, which has unpredictable levels of internal production, the report states.
