WASHINGTON -- Federal authorities announced charges Tuesday in the largest healthcare fraud scam in the nation's history, indicting a Dallas-area physician on charges that he bilked Medicare of nearly $375 million and accusing him of sending "recruiters" to scoop up patients and get them to sign for treatments he never provided.
Indeed, the Medicare billings piled up by Dr. Jacques Roy grew so large over the last five years that outside experts questioned why it took prosecutors so long to notice what he was doing in what is far and away the largest example of greed and excess in the healthcare industry.
"To get that kind of money, you'd need to be treating a million people," said Andrew Selesnick, a Los Angeles attorney who represents physicians. "You'd have to have 30 locations and tons of people going through them."
The arrest of the Canadian-born doctor, a physician for nearly 30 years, comes at a time when healthcare fraud is sharply increasing, with fewer people able to afford doctor visits and Medicare and other government programs paying less in reimbursements.

(18,063 posts)Nailing a fraudster. And for those outside critics who whined that it shouldn't have taken so long. Well they got him, didn't they?
Call me skeptical, but I don't think bushie or any republican administration would go after the fraudster doctors and medical corporations. Because they bribe/give too much money to republicans. In fact some of those medical criminals like former Columbia/HCA fraud CEO Rick Scott get elected to be governors instead. (current governor of Florida)

(38,549 posts)Roy held a medical licence in Quebec from 1981 until 1995.
Quebec's college of physicians says he had no record of disciplinary action.
He is a Canadian who deserted the public health insurance system here and took his mainly publicly paid-for education south to make his fortune.
Sad for you neighbours. But not surprising from this side of the border.

Keep Your Government Hands Off of My Medicare Fraud!
The Texas physician accused of masterminding the largest home health care fraud in history, a $345 million scheme that recruited homeless "patients," backed the Tea Party and Governor Perry.
Is anyone surprised? Do you think that the candidates that got his money are going to give it to charity or to the government to reduce the national debt? Nah! Me neither.

But do you hear Texas republicans calling this fraudster out - denouncing him? Returning his money? Praising the Obama admin for finally catching a big one of the fraudsters actually contributing to the rising costs of health care?
Nah me neither. Complete silence on the right wing side.
