Another Traffic Delay Report: Cesar Chavez in Austin this weekend

Beginning early morning Saturday, August 17, the eastbound traffic lanes on Cesar Chavez from Lavaca to Colorado Street will be closed and detours will be in place. For traffic traveling westbound, the inside lane will be closed. Additionally, the northbound outside lane on South 1st Street will be closed. There will be no closures for traffic traveling southbound on South 1st Street. Detours are expected to be in effect until late evening on Sunday, August 18th.

The work being performed will enhance both pedestrian safety and bicycle mobility at the crosswalk on Cesar Chavez at the southeast corner of City Hall. The current crosswalk will be made safer by relocating the eastbound Cesar Chavez crossing to the west side of a large utility box. The northbound South 1st Street curb south of the intersection will also be modified to slow right turning vehicles onto eastbound Cesar Chavez.

A bicycle curb cut will also be installed as part of the project. The curb cut will help increase connectivity for cyclists who wish to leave the South 1st Street Bridge to travel north on Lavaca Street.

Motorists, bicyclists and pedestrians are asked to use caution and be extra alert in the work zone.
