Political signs were 'getting out of hand,' PennDOT says

If you're wondering where you can stake some last-minute election signs, you probably want to avoid state highways.

PennDOT workers took down signs last Thursday because they were becoming a safety issue, said spokesman Greg Penny. In Cumberland and Dauphin counties, between 100-200 signs each were removed, he said, adding that none had been removed prior to that day.

"This is not the first election this is a problem," Penny said. "For us, the over-riding thing is safety...We try to discourage them along state highways and expressways."

After having some of her signs removed by PennDOT Thursday, Jody Rebarchak, Democratic candidate in the 104th District, questioned whether PennDOT again took about 40 of her signs down again Sunday night, including some on Front Street.

I am referring to the state-owned lands which comprise the margins along highways owed by the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. However, the state does not enforce the penalty aspect of the law. When violations rise to the level of safety issues, as did the situation described in the article, the PA Department of Transportation will remove the signs. However, those situations are rare, and most signs are removed by the campaigns after the elections are over.

I see very few Hillary signs. Definitely none along the highways, just an occasional yard sign.
