Officer hands out an astounding 19,000 parking tickets in a year

New York City’s top traffic agent is a relentless, ruthless street-sweeper who slings summonses at a rate of one every 9 minutes, 45 seconds.

South Brooklyn’s orange tsunami, Arnous Morin, 53, wrote nearly 19,000 parking tickets in fiscal year 2015, an average of 76 per day he worked, city records analyzed by The Post and AAA Northeast show.

The one-man ticket blitz dished out 4,000 more summonses than the city’s No. 2 traffic cop.

And Morin’s base pay of $36,000 was eclipsed 33 times over by the amount of fines he generated for city coffers — $1.2?million.

Morin, who was a Catholic-school principal in his native Haiti, is unapologetic about his lack of mercy for motorists.

My son was a cop for about five years. Everything was fine until he got assigned to the traffic division, and was subjected to constant pressure to write more tickets. Common sense did not enter into the equation, his supervisor explained to him; the chief needed to be able to go before the City Council and brag about the amount of money that the department generated for the city.

The Council then would be receptive to demands by the police unions for larger raises. So by not writing enough tickets, you are letting all your co-workers down.

Eventually he had enough, told them to stuff it and resigned.

And obviously there is truth to what you're saying. Parking enforcement has a role in keeping a city moving. Double parking, blocking fire hydrants and handicapped spots is dangerous and must be controlled.

Although I'd have to say that most parking enforcement can be handled by meter maids (don't want to appear sexist here but I don't know any other term) and doesn't require a sworn officer. This is even more cost effective since the meter maids are paid less than the cops and drive around in a glorified golf cart rather than a cruiser.

Moving violations of course require a cop, but the fines are substantially higher than for parking violations, so the cost benefit ratio still pertains.

I think they are more or less meter maids, but they put them in police colors because people in the old brown uniforms were getting attacked. They don't carry weapons.

I hate getting tickets, but I understand it. The issues aren't limited to commercial districts (and most are mixed in NYC). Double parking in front of a residential building inconveniences both drivers and those stuck in parking spots. Blocking fire hydrants slows down fire crews. Blocking bus stops forces the bus to pick people up in the street. On and on...

I honk at them and stare them down - I get so furious. My wife gets mad at me because I do this all the things me in Harlem and she thinks they'll pick a real fight with us. Fuck them! I want their fine to be $250 * number of people stuck behind their selfish ass. It isn't terrible with someone in the car on a quiet street, but a busy avenue causing a massive bottleneck? Get the fucking guillotine!!
