NY1
Police are asking for the public's help in finding an armed robber in the Bronx.

Investigators say a masked man walked into the Black Era clothing store on Melrose Avenue around 10 a.m. last Friday, pulled out a gun, and demanded the owner fill a knapsack with money.

5. De Blasio rolls out $12.7 m plan to curb gun violence citywide

Aug 2014

Khorri Atkinson

Just past the halfway point of his first year as mayor of New York City, Bill de Blasio is now counting on “violence interrupters”—most of whom are former gang members—to help his administration prevent gun violence in some of the city’s most crime-infested neighborhoods.

This move has led to the creation of the “Gun Violence Crisis Management System,” an initiative that will cost the city $12.7 million. It will focus primarily on 14 precincts across the five boroughs—two in Manhattan, four in Bronx and Brooklyn, three in Queens and one in Staten Island—which account for 51 percent of shootings across the city.

8. De Blasio Attends Crime Data Briefing
Fri Aug 22, 2014, 11:12 AM
Aug 2014

YONI BASHAN and MICHAEL HOWARD SAUL

Mayor Bill de Blasio on Thursday attended his first CompStat meeting—a crime statistics briefing with top police officials—at a time when the city is grappling with a new wave of gun violence.

Mr. de Blasio's spokesman said the mayor planned to attend one of the data-driven meetings since he took office Jan. 1 and that the timing was a result of workable scheduling.

But analysts said Mr. de Blasio's appearance also sent a deliberate message: that he is engaged and is taking trends in public safety seriously.

So far this year, the city has seen reductions in most major crime categories. But shootings are at their highest levels since 2012, according to New York Police Department data.

Prosecutors dismissed felony assault charges against the former New York City Council finance director, Preston Niblack, on Friday morning.

Niblack, who was hired in 2008 as former Council speaker Christine Quinn's budget chief, was arrested in February after his domestic partner accused him of attacking him with a statue and a picture frame inside his Upper West Side apartment.

QUEENS, N.Y. (WABC) -- She thought she saw a few bees flying around.

But Frieda Turkmenilli had no idea that 50,000 of them were calling the ceiling of her Elmhurst apartment, home.

"How did they get there? Where did they come from?" she said Thursday. "I was shocked."

Seven months after he was left bloodied following an encounter with NYPD cops for jaywalking, 84-year-old Kang Chun Wong said walking it’s “very scary” crossing the streets of his Upper West Side neighborhood.

Wong said he was hunkered down in his W. 97th St. apartment for two months after the harrowing incident in January in which the retired restaurant owner walked into a ticket blitz targeting jaywalkers.

MINEOLA, N.Y. (WABC) -- Nearly 40,000 speed-camera tickets have been issued in Nassau County so far this summer and none of them count. Nassau County Executive Ed Mangano is declaring amnesty for all speed-camera tickets issued in Nassau this summer.

Doreen Delach is glad it's happening, because she got 11 speeding tickets in a school zone in Bethpage. Delach presumed there was no school, and she was doing the regular speed limit - under 40 miles per hour, and not 25 miles per hour.
