Santa Fe audit: Temporary workers denied benefits

The city of Santa Fe shortchanged numerous temporary and seasonal employees of medical and retirement benefits that they were eligible to receive after they were kept on the payroll for extended periods, according to a new internal audit.

The audit was initiated in part because a former employee said during an exit interview that some managers might be abusing the temporary or seasonal employee job classification to avoid paying benefits.

Conducted by the city Internal Audit Office, the report concluded that 13 of 41 temporary or seasonal employees were eligible to receive medical benefits but did not. The audit also found that 20 of the 41 employees were eligible to receive retirement benefits but did not.

Auditors concluded that the lack of monitoring controls in the city Human Resources Department were the root cause of employees receiving less than they were due.
