Help fight the Pilgrim Pipeline .. They are bullying towns and threatening ordinary people

A private company seeking to build a pipeline carrying crude oil from Albany, NY, to Linden, N.J, is threatening homeowners that their property might be acquired via eminent domain unless they allow its inspectors access to their land, according to environmentalists.

The Eastern Environmental Law Clinic, representing the New Jersey Sierra Club, sent a letter to the law firm representing the company, Pilgrim Pipelines Holding LLC, saying the assertions are factually wrong and to desist from making the claims.

"The goals of these wrongful legal and factual claims are to falsely induce homeowners to sign away their property rights and chill the opposition to the Pilgrim Pipeline,'' wrote Aaron Kleinbaum, an attorney for the clinic in a letter to DeCotiis, Fitzpatrick & Cole, LLP.

My town, Berkeley Heights is on its path -- We have a Town Hall meeting on 17th - we are hoping to pass a resolution to prevent these bastards from entering our property to conduct surveys.

What else can we do to stop/slow these guys down?

1. I wonder what Christie thinks of this, or has assured them.

Seems strange that they would act so assertively with no assurances.

2. Chatham passed a resolution against these pricks .. they building not one but two

pipes .. one will carry the most explosive form of crude while the other will carry kerosine.

They may have dig up private property. Laying the pipeline will cause property values to fall along its route apart from exposing the home owner to risks from explosion/ leaks & ground water contamination.

If these guys get utility status from NJ - none of the tows will get any revenue from this

3. We are under attack all over the state

This - and the Penneast Pipeline.

I seriously have a hard time understanding why ANYONE would think either one of these are a good idea.

4. It is a good idea for the Oil Companies as they dont have to pay 100's of truck drivers to transport

the oil .. it is much cheaper to pump it.

If you happen to live/own property along the pipeline - then tough luck buddy. You did not do your due diligence while buying the house.

Christie will not oppose this even if his Republican constituents do -- given his national ambitions

This is literally a spark away from a disaster .. People have no clue whom they are letting into their towns.

Myth: If I receive a letter from a Pilgrim Pipeline surveyor asking to survey my land, that means the pipeline could be coming right through my property.

Fact: Pilgrim is proposing to have the overwhelming majority of the projected pipeline route run along existing rights of way. In New York, as it heads south from Albany, the pipeline would run along the New York State Thruway within the existing highway easement. Landowners on either side of the Thruway may receive survey letters per NY state regulations requiring land adjacent to the proposed route to be reviewed for a variety of reasons, including environmental, archeological, etc. – a standard requirement for permit applications.

The same is true of New Jersey, where the vast majority of the route would run along existing utility rights of way, and surveys must be conducted per New Jersey state regulations that mandate a standard land review requirement for permits. Depending on local geography, the range of review in both states is between 50 to 300 feet to either side of the centerline, which is why property owners receive survey requests. The footprint of the pipeline itself is only about 5.5 feet.

P.S. Oops, sorry I missed this: the Sierra Club has provided a footnooted generic municipal resolution against the pipeline. It worked for ALEC!
