I always learn from the speakers at rallies. It is so good to go in person.

Great to see so many Natives with jackets or banners of where they were from.

Jesse Venture even spoke.

see to the right of this link to vote if Washington should change their name.

from a someone who just posted her take on the event:

The Washington “Redskins” played the Minnesota “Vikings” football team tonight.
“Hey! Hey! Ho! Ho!
Little Red Sambo has got to go!”
Hundreds turned out for the anti-racist demonstration including Congresswoman Betty McCollum (one of two Native Americans in Congress, co-chair of the Native American Caucus) and ex-Governor Jesse Ventura (who signed the Coldwater protection bill in 2001).
My sign read “Start Seeing Racism.” Last time we responded to the Washington team in town (about 1998) was during the Monica-Clinton fiasco; at that time my sign read “Welcome Washington Cocksuckers.”
The word “redskins” refers to Indian scalps that dried brownish-red before being turned in to government officials for bounty money. The Indian extermination practice began in New England and spread across the colonies with Manifest Destiny expansion. It was prevalent in Minnesota after the Dakota-US war in 1862, the one that concluded with the mass hanging of the Dakota 38, largest mass hanging in America. Little Crow’s (Dakota war chief) scalp fetched $500, a huge sum in 1863.
The movement to change racist mascot names is 45 years old. Most schools have complied and not all Native reference are pejorative.
Isn’t it amazing what you don’t learn in school?
