The Detroit Institute of Arts is a place I've known since my childhood. Beyond family and school trips, I took a DSR bus with a friend to see the Tutankhamen exhibit in the 60's (early 60's, IIRC). I even heard Schubert chamber music played in one of their galleries.
It is, indeed, a wonderful place. And yes, Rivera murals are utterly astounding. Unforgettable.
I also saw an exhibition of the Tannahill Bequest that blew my mind.
