Mary-Ellen Manning anounces for State Senate seat

My good friend Mary-Ellen has now formally announced her candidacy for Senator Berry's seat now that he has announced his plans to retire. Senator Berry will be missed, but Governor's sCouncillor Manning will be a great asset to our State Senate.

PEABODY — Mary-Ellen Manning made it official last night, becoming the first candidate to announce her candidacy to replace longtime state Sen. Fred Berry.

Manning, a member of the Governor's Council since 2001, made the announcement at a meeting of the Mack Park Neighborhood Association in Salem.

"I have a strong record of experience and have been representing those five communities (in the Senate district) and 32 others the last 11 years," Manning said in an interview yesterday. "I see this as an opportunity to concentrate on the five towns that are nearest and dearest to me."

Berry, now the Senate majority leader, represents the 2nd Essex District, which includes Salem, Beverly, Peabody, Danvers and Topsfield. He announced last month that he would not seek re-election next November.
