In its second year in Southern Maryland, Mission of Mercy served approximately 700 people in need of dental care. The first day at the Mission of Mercy event held Friday and Saturday, June 18-19 at North Point High School in Waldorf was a little more exciting than organizers probably would have liked. Seven people had to be taken to hospitals, one a volunteer who suffered a heart attack, and another a woman who went into labor.
Overall, however, the event provided free dental work for around 700 patients without dental insurance and involved 100 dentists, hygienists, paramedics, 600 volunteers and two external generators, garnering people from not only Southern Maryland, but surrounding states as well. ...We have patients from Delaware, Pennsylvania, Kentucky, West Virginia and the Ukraine, said event organizer, Dr. Garner Morgan DSS. We also have a patient from a small African nation.
The whole concept came about fifteen years ago, he added. "It was originally established in the state of Virginia. This is the seventh one in the state of Maryland. We did one three years ago in Western Maryland. This is the second one in Southern Maryland.

For every dollar that is donated, we can do seventeen dollars worth of work, he said. If someone gives us a hundred dollars, we can do seven hundred dollars worth of work on that contribution.
