Two baby deaths at Md. hospital lead to discovery of potentially fatal bacteria

The recent deaths of two babies at Prince George’s County Hospital Center led to the discovery of a potentially deadly bacteria in the neonatal intensive care unit, a hospital spokeswoman said Tuesday.

Three babies have tested positive for the Pseudomonas bacteria since the investigation began, said Delores Butler, a spokeswoman for Dimension Healthcare Systems, the nonprofit that runs hospitals in Prince George’s County.

The NICU was being shut down on Tuesday, and nine babies were being transferred from the unit to other hospitals in the region “out of an abundance of caution,” Butler said.

The presence of the bacteria, and the closing of the NICU, was first reported by WJLA (Channel 7).
