School District Superintendent vows to break Iowa law to protect students
And I commend him.
Davenport, Iowa school superintendent Arthur Tate has declared that he will break Iowa law by using more money than the State of Iowa has authorized.
The move will stave off budget cuts that Tate and the school board have been discussing for months.
He is taking "full responsiblityfor the violation of state law."
Now the problem is that the local school district among the largest in the state, is underfunded due to an antiquated law and interference from Governor Branstad. Tate wondered aloud why the district, which has money in the bank, is limited by the state on how much they can spend.
Here is a link which explains it much better than I do. www.qctimes.com/education. It should be about halfway down the page. This is an outrageous abuse of power by the Iowa state legislature in my opinion and since I have a child attending a school here, I fully support Dr. Tate's actions. He did say that he understands that he may get fired but is still sticking up for the youngsters in the district. Go Dr. Tate.
