Continued Divisions Throughout Local DECs
by Kartik Krishnaiyer
The closeness of the FDP Chairs race exposed the fault lines on the state party level that exist throughout Florida. They also demonstrated the strong support two excellent candidates had gained through a bruising campaign. Alan Clendenin put many important reform minded ideas on the table, that were embraced by rank in file DEC members across the state. Allison Tant, who has had a key role in formulating and funding a progressive network of advocacy groups that have helped negatively define Rick Scott, also has a background as a strong fundraiser.
The contest could have served as a springboard for ideas and uniting the party going into a tough 2014 election cycle. But what has instead happened is that feuds, both age old and brand new are consuming DEC's throughout the state.
Large county DECs seem to always be characterized by factions and right now is no exception. But it seems the energy and possible positive momentum generated by a contentious but necessary race for FDP Chair (the closest in election in at least two decades) may be refocused on petty in-fighting at the DEC level.

When you have the democratic bastion of Palm Beach County, voting 97.3% for Clendedin, then the committeeman turning and voting another way, you will get a division. We were mortified when we learned that Karen Thurman, installed by Sen. Nelson, was lobbying for the republicans, because demorilizing us while taking 100K from us for a salary, was not enough. Now we have a woman, Tant, who lobbies republicans and was also nvolved in the scrubbing of thousands of democrats on rolls via Choice Point AND married to a man who worked for the Bush team in Bush vs. Gore. The arm twisting behind closed doors was awful. Now Palm Beach is taking action to remove that committman. But Nelson and the powers to be KNEW ALL OF THIS. Well I guess those who do the work are finally sick of it.
And no, it was NOT close. Debbie Wasserman Shultz called "landslide" in PBC before they were even finished counting! A tactic used by the cousin of GW Bush on Fox, when he called the election for George early. Do we have a candidate to challege DWS?

1. The election is over. What is to be gained by further division?
Tant won. Clendenin lost. How about putting your energy into electing Democrats rather than undermining the duly elected party leadership?
