About 1,500 join Women's March in Gainesville
Across the world, people spent their Saturday afternoons marching, picketing and protesting in support of the Women's March on Washington, and Gainesville was no exception.
An estimated 1,500 women, men and children marched with signs and chanted Saturday on Newberry Road to protest in solidarity with the Women's March in Washington. Candy Churchill, a National Women's Liberation organizer, said the Gainesville chapter of National Women's Liberation organized the picket event partially as a part of the #womenstrike, called for by NWL, and partially so people in Gainesville could stand up for their beliefs in their own town.
"We wanted to have a picket so people had somewhere to go," Churchill said.
The protest gave locals the chance to protest who otherwise would not have been able to. One protester, Rachel Kline, said after she was unable to make it to D.C., she was happy to be able to protest in the place she calls her home.
