Alligator bites off most of woman's hand at Everglades fish camp

A 49-year-old woman from central Florida suffered a severe hand wound when she was bitten by an alligator in the Everglades on Friday night, fire officials said.

The woman was with a group of seven or eight people at Willards fish camp, a remote site west of Coral Springs that is accessible only by boat or helicopter, said Broward Sheriff Fire Rescue spokesman Mike Jachles.

The woman was standing on the dock and dropped a can into the water, Jachles said. When she reached for the can, she was attacked by a 4- to 5-foot alligator that was in the water.

“She sustained a severe hand injury that was almost a full amptutation of the right hand in the wrist,” Jachles said.
