DC's Snowy Owl Is Dead
It took a lickin' and kept on tickin', but this time its luck ran out.
The Snowy Owl Is Dead
It is with the heaviest of hearts that we report that the snowy owl hit by a bus in D.C., rehabilitated in Minnesota and released to the wild is dead.
From the Raptor Center:
Sadly, we're writing today to let you know that The Raptor Center has learned the snowy owl's body has been recovered from the shoulder of a Minnesota highway, near where he had been released last spring. The snowy's cause of death is uncertain, but the placement of the body indicates he may have been hit by a vehicle. The body was in good condition, indicating the owl was successfully hunting, and was identifiable by a bird band placed on the leg prior to release.
The snowy owl was first spotted near McPherson Square in late January. She was hit by a Metro bus a short time later. The owl was first treated by the National Zoo, then by City Wildlife and finally by the Raptor Center, which eventually returned her to the wild.
