If you thought Prop 8 was outrageous, you may find this proposed ballot initiative to be totally insane.Earlier this month, Christian anti-gay activist Matt McLaughlin took advantage of California's extremely lenient policy on ballot initiatives by filing papers to have residents vote on his Sodomite Suppression Act. If you're wondering if that is what it sounds like, it is.
"Seeing that it is better that offenders should die rather than that all of us should be killed by God's just wrath against us for the folly of tolerating-wickedness in our midst," the measure reads, "the People of California wisely command, in the fear of God, that any person who willingly touches another person of the same gender for purposes of sexual gratification be put to death by bullets to the head or by any other convenient method."
Yes, you read that right.
Matt McLaughlin, who is also an attorney, would like the people of California to vote on whether or not they want a law to "put to death by bullets to the head" all gay people or "any person who willingly touches another person of the same gender for purposes of sexual gratification."

(11,619 posts)should be repealed. I will not sign the petition, but it is quite possible that there are enough right wing religious fanatics that it will make it onto the ballot, and I will get bombarded by advertisements paid for by Mormons and the Koch brothers.

(149,560 posts)IF it does, it will be soundly trounced at the ballot box.
What a horrible initiative.

(43,049 posts)as policies and programs become more intricate, the more simple-minded of the public will be attracted to this kind of nonsense. It really should be seen as a joke and any asshole supporting it should be laughed out of town, but between the idiots supporting it and the outrage brigade against it we'll likely enough see it take up much too much space.

descending on me everywhere.
They are often worded in a way to "cleverly" sound like they are something I would like to vote for, but actually stand for something very different.
I'll sign up to support the "Peoples' Initiative for Trees and Wildlife" which seeks to preserve California's unique forest heritage for families of the future. I want to support the "challenged" looking signature person because, hey, here they are trying to make a living and feed the pathetic looking kids they've got standing there.
After it passes, I find out that I've voted to let Consolidated Mining and Timber to dump their toxic waste poison into the few remaining salmon runs.
Yes, I try to keep up on all the initiatives, but, after I sign one that's legitimate, the Name Harvester will put another clip-board in front of me, and another one after that, and on and on. It's like phone solicitors. My well-intentioned move to help someone out becomes a problem and an embarrassment. And they're out pan-handling for signatures in all the strategic locations.

(6,604 posts)somebody please tell me that this guy is a prankster with unutterably bad taste, or otherwise trying to make some point about the laxity of the California ballot initiative process.
Otherwise, can I drop a couple hundred bucks to propose a similar initiative placing a bounty on this asshole's head? Like "The Matt McLaughlin Doesn't Deserve to Live Act"?

This invalidates that entire petition.

(24,262 posts)first, I'm pretty sure but I think unlike in the past, judicial review happens before the initiative goes on the ballot. That would kill it right there. Another thing to consider is that a signature on a petition is a matter of public record. Anyone who signs this may find their names published to identify them as the vicious homophobes they are. Once these people are identified, they would become pariahs in California if not US society. Sometimes it's good for bad people to stand up and identify themselves for all to see.

(4,514 posts)The list of initiatives proposed in OK would astonish you. For starters someone thought it was a good idea to ban all Pepsi products and jail those caught with them. Why? Because they contain "products of conception" (aborted babies) you silly goose!

(78,249 posts)The states LGBT Caucus, made up of members of the state Assembly and Senate, has sent a complaint to the State Bar of California asking for an investigation and corrective action against Matthew Gregory McLaughlin, who wrote the Sodomite Suppression Act in February. McLaughlins initiativewould authorize citizens to kill gays with bullets to the head in the name of God.
The complaint filed by the LGBT Caucus reads in part: We have spent most of our personal and professional lives combating bigotry wherever it lies. While we believe that this measure may not qualify for the statewide ballot, we cannot in good conscience stand idly by.
McLaughlin was admitted to the California bar in 1998 and attended UC Irvine and George Mason University. McLaughlin gained attention in 2004 when he filed an initiative to make the King James Bible a textbook in public schools
