Last meal for S.F. festival?

This weekend's Street Food Festival, started by La Cocina in 2008, could be the last.


Thousands of hungry people swarmed San Francisco's Mission District on Saturday for what might be the last San Francisco Street Food Festival.



The festival, now in its sixth year, was launched by La Cocina, a nonprofit that provides low-income, mostly immigrant women cooks with support and affordable commercial kitchen space - a must for any growing food operation.



Many of the festival's more than 80 vendors were La Cocina clients, serving up their creations alongside established, award-winning restaurants and food trucks from across the Bay Area.



Caleb Zigas, La Cocina's executive director, said the festival is a celebration of San Francisco's "entrepreneurial spirit" and an opportunity to "share space and eat with people from all over." The festival, he said, puts the people at La Cocina "on the same level as other chefs celebrated frequently."

But the festival's size, La Cocina acknowledges, has outgrown the neighborhood. They hope to find a separate organization to help with licensing and organization, and to find a new site for the festival.

Potential locations for the next festival include the AT&T Park parking lot or Pier 70.
