Oakland Zoo gets mysterious holiday gift
Just in time for Christmas, the Oakland Zoo received an unexpected surprise: a $1 million donation from an anonymous donor.
Santa Claus, anyone? Who else provides mysterious gifts this time of year? The San Francisco Foundation sent a check to the zoo under the condition of not revealing the giver. Zoo leaders are more than grateful for the gift, but feel amiss at not being able to send a thank-you card. “We always want to make the best effort to promptly and properly acknowledge all gifts, and we were eager to know who to thank for this extreme generosity," said Emma Lee Twitchell, the zoo’s director of development. "There is no more important time than the end of the year for nonprofit organizations to reach out to the community for support and encouragement in meeting the needs. This contribution will have a huge impact on our ability to plan for the New Year.” http://www.bizjournals.com/sanfrancisco/blog/2012/12/oakland-zoo-opens-mysterious-holiday.html

4. They could rent a sky writer and have it fly over Oakland
|
saying "Thank You from your zoo." They might even get more donations! I thought it was going to be a new animal. But as we all well know money is always nice as a gift and cash is king. What a nice tax write off for the donor that would be if the zoo is a qualifying organization. Merry Christmas AsahinaKimi! Peace. LMSP

6. that would be impressive, but
|
wouldn't it eat up a lot of that money that could be used to actively provide for the animals?
I don't know how much a skywriter costs.....maybe it would actually be an investment. |

9. Saying thank you is an investment.
|
And a way to pay forward, IMHO.

10. Rental rates:
|
Approximately $800 for up to 30 letters locally. Out-of-town rates are normally $1,000 for up to 30 letters plus expenses.

13. ah, I see.
|
$800. Is not too bad.
I totally agree that courtesy is an investment that this world sorely needs........ In a situation like this, where every penny is necessary, I just wouldn't want to fritter away needed $$$ on gimmicks. |

16. Skywriters need love too.
|
I don't see them as in high demand and they may have mouths to feed just like the zoo... who knows?

11. George Zimmer (Men's Wearhouse) has given the zoo support in the past.
|
He lives in Oakland, or the environs, and is quite unconventional for a CEO. I guarantee it.

I used to feel that Gertrude Stein was right on about there being no there, there! Perhaps the one million dollar man or woman feels different. It really is a pretty zoo. And thanks for the help, whoever you are! |
