Library Volunteers are scabs and who will bury the Dead? .. Fresno Co workers strike on Monday 1/23
Opp.. forgot to post here.
A very brave and amazing thing is going to happen in Fresno on Monday. The largest strike i have seen in my life time happening in Fresno.
over 4000 Fresno County workers are going to strike for 3 days. They have accept pay cut after pay cut in this past decade and they have finally said NO MORE.
Please say a prayer for them, send support and come and join them if you can.
it has been interesting to read the news on this in the last few days.. and it has gone from
4000 workers striking then the CA nurses Union to join them, to Library ask for more volunteers to keep the Library open.. and now.. What about the funerals... and we have 2 more days to go.. I wonder what Sunday's paper will hold.
here is my post on General Discussion.
Incredible: (conservative ruled) Fresno, Ca: 4,000 Fresno County workers to begin strike Monday 1/23
"Last month, union workers were subject to a 9% pay cut or higher, and pleas to reconsider the reduction went unheeded by county managers.
Management has insisted that concessions are necessary to help balance the county's budget. Other county employees also have seen wage cuts and many have been laid off.
The union's case got a boost Wednesday when the state labor board issued a complaint against Fresno County for unfairly negotiating with employees."
"The complaint, which came after the union filed a grievance with the California Public Employee Relations Board, accused the county of improperly forcing concessions on workers, not giving labor talks time to work out and interfering with employee protests."
** You know the Freepers and actually also Fresno's only talk radio (hate radio) KMJ is going to foam at the mouth against them.
You can already see it by the comments on the Fresno Bee site.
To have 4000 walk out is going to be amazing.
I hope Union members from other cities send their support to the County union workers. The will need your prayers and positive thoughts.
It is a very couragous thing for these workers to do.
The labor movement was the principal force that transformed misery and despair into hope and progress. Out of its bold struggles, economic and social reform gave birth to unemployment insurance, old-age pensions, government relief for the destitute and, above all, new wage levels that meant not mere survival but a tolerable life. The captains of industry did not lead this transformation; they resisted it until they were overcome.
and if you don't belong to a union.. get this union shirt. I love mine:

1. The volunteers in my local library sell books to help the library.
I donate books and occasionally buy a couple.
They would not be able to do much more than that in the library.
Thanks so much to all the librarians out there. Unsung heroes.

2. In my Northern CA county, volunteers do most of the visible jobs.
They're at the information desk processing check-ins and checkouts. They troubleshoot the automated checking machines, printers, and microfilm readers. They shelve books and other media.
Sad to say but most patrons wouldn't miss the librarians for a few days --the only clue they'd have is a picket line in front of the door.
