INCUMBENTS AND CHALLENGERS CLASH IN SANTEE DEBATE

By Nadin Abbott

September 20, 2012 (Santee)—Candidates for Santee’s City Council and Mayoral races met at the City Council complex for a candidate forum organized by the League of Women Voters and moderated by Dana Quitner. Mayor Randy Voepel squared off against Rudy Reyes, while long-time Councilman Jack Dale faced off against challenger Maggie Acerra.

The mostly-friendly debate touched on a series of issues of importance for the city. These ranged from the budget and how the end of redevelopment agencies has affected the city to public safety, including how the Cedar fire affected both Reyes and Voepel. Marijuana medical collectives, also a hot issue, drew some fiery responses.

Voepel started by telling the audience how close the devastating Cedar Fire came to the city. He recalled “One hundred foot walls of flames. I rode with a La Mesa reserve fire truck, with duct tape numbers on the side. In a six-hour period we saved Santee. We lost no structures.” Later on he told the audience that he wants to continue to serve the community in the rough seas the economy is presenting, adding “A captain does not leave the bridge.”

4. They are always fun, I tell you

by the time the POTUS and challenger come, I will have a few under my belt. It gets to the point you can tell how well people did after a while.

5. Heard just the other day on NPR that California is +24 for Obama.

I will be surprised if they spend much time here. But it will be interesting to watch if they do.

8. North east ish from down town san diego

it is one of our bedside communities.

It was famous, or infamous, during the Santana HS mass shooting and the Cedar Fire. Otherwise, news and Santee generally speaking are not uttered in the same sentence.

9. I was sort of teasing...

...you.

I grew up there. Attended Santana. Family still lives there.

10. Well if you ever come to town

let me know.

If there is no fire going on.

Now I need to work on two stories, one that has to do with labor (and needs two languages, will try to send it to the Spanish press too), and the second, easy peachy... I even got ROMNEY's caravan.
