somebody stepped in it at the Wildcat

Violence and homophobia are serious issues that affect everyone, plague our society, and they should not be tolerated coming from University of Arizona supported public media.

Script of The Cartoon:

Father: Ya know son...
If you ever tell me you're gay...
I will shoot you with my shotgun, roll you up in a carpet and throw you off of a bridge...

Son: Well I guess that's what you call a "Fruit Roll Up!"

Father and Son: Ahh Ha ha ha Ha ha... bwah Ha Ha ha Ha ha haa!!

Condoning violence and homophobia by allowing this to cartoon to run is reprehensible and cannot be tolerated as acceptable with a simple apology or explanation.

Daily Wildcat: Fire your cartoonist, editor-in-chief, and copy editor. Thanks! ]

It's important. Will you sign it too?

1. As a (nearly) lifelong Tucsonan and a former UofA student, this outrages me.

The cartoonist has been fired but I signed the petition, anyway. Thanks for the heads-up, Kali.

6. Pride Alliance holds discussion for students, community to address Daily Wildcat comic

Students and community members gathered at the Grand Ballroom in the Student Union
Memorial Center on Wednesday night to address the Arizona Daily Wildcat’s publication
of a comic strip that depicted a father threatening his child about coming out.

The Associated Students of the University of Arizona Pride Alliance held the discussion,
inviting the campus to discuss the comic that ran on Oct. 16, what actions should be
taken at the Wildcat, and who should be held accountable.

The comic that was published in Tuesday’s issue sparked a backlash from readers across the country.
The comic was first put on the Wildcat’s Facebook page, which led to readers expressing their
concern through phone calls, emails and online comments. Eventually, Mike Webb, a gender
and women’s studies senior, began a petition for the resignation of Kristina Bui, the
Wildcat’s editor-in-chief, the cartoonist and copy editor. The petition currently has 8,700 signatures.

The forum began with an introduction from Jennifer Hoefle Olson, program coordinator of LGBTQ Affairs,
followed by speeches by Bui and Webb. The forum was then opened to comments from the audience.
