1. Nice color detail. Small plane, helicopter, or one hell of a ladder?

3. Small plane

I was at 1,000' from the ground for this picture. I can legally go lower so long as I stay away from people and structures, but for safety reasons I never go below 1,000'. For this picture, I opened my window so I wasn't shooting through it. I'm using a wide angle lens, so I'm actually closer than it appears.

6. Wait a minute................

you opened your window to take the picture and you are flying this plane? Who steered when you did that?

2. Cool

I've only seen it once from the visitor center seen at the top of the crater in your pix.
It's quite amazing.
Nice ladder, by the way.

4. I've never actually seen it from the visitors center

And this was my 2nd trip. The first time I flew over it was mid-day and very hot. I took this picture from about 7,000' above the ground because the heat was causing a lot of thermals and it was bumpy as hell even at higher altitudes.
