Question about simple remote controls for SLRs

Do they require a power source, like a battery? I have an old Canon RS60-E3 (photo attached) -- about 12 years old -- that I'm trying to use with a new EOS Rebel T3i. The lens will auto focus okay but the camera will not take the shot when I press it all the way down. Any thoughts why it isn't working? Thanks

I had a Nikon D100 and couldn't use a remote without buying a $250 power pack. The D300 is designed to work without an extra power pack.

In your case, it sounds like you need to upgrade your remote.

I think you need a specific remote for the Rebel, but I am just a novice pretending to know something

Some remote releases require batteries because they have timers and other functions that require electronics. That one appears to be a simple release and hold type. Take it to a canon dealer and they can try it out on another camera.

Is it plugged in all the way? The plug on mine needed a little touch up to make it smooth enough to insert fully. It should feel smooth, without any sharp ridges.
No power source needed.

Are you acquainted with OHM Meters? All it is is a simple 2 position switch.
If per chance yours is bad, they can be had for around USD$20.
