Been busy. Lot going on, leaving me little time for relaxing - which includes capturing the world around me. Mira has been wonderful, lending me a shoulder and an ear. Things are improving, thankfully. Missed you all!
Snapped some shots today. Birds, of course. Mostly hummers. The new place came with scores of hummingbirds and they are all in battle mode. I spent more time watching them mob each other than I did taking photos. I have several feeders up but hummingbirds can be greedy and they are very territorial.
I filled my garden with flowers they love. I also created a tropical watering hole for the birds and lizards, with bamboo and assorted ferns. I made a homemade dripper the birds enjoy and I have a small water fountain for the hummers.

Love you all!!

(53,938 posts)You are one of the few people here who makes me happy.
I love the picture. I have been trying so hard to get hummingbirds to come to my yard with feeders and plants. Sadly, I think Oklahoma is losing our population and I am not sure why. I have noticed a marked decrease in my town since we moved back here from NOLA.
I hope you are feeling better and what ever is plaguing you is quickly and thoroughly defeated. to Mira for being your friend indeed.

(90,762 posts)Hummers are remaining around here longer than usual. It's staying warmer for longer , so they linger instead of migrating at the usual time. Some even remain all winter now. Could help explain why you aren't seeing them in the numbers you once did.
I am feeling better and will feel even better when I finish getting the house together. I don't mind the moving so much as I do the packing and unpacking. I always want new everything once I move. Seems easier than trying to fit the old arrangement into a new place. Alas, not very practical.
I'm building shelves soon and I hope the learning curve isn't too steep.

(130,844 posts)I don't love them, but do seem to have quite a few. I often see a wasp on my bedroom window, and occasionally it cooperates for a photo-op!

(90,762 posts)the good bugs. Some bugs benefit flowers/veggies - some don't.
And it is always good when they pose for you.

(90,762 posts)I've grown to love the little buggers. I have an older sister that pokes fun at me for my birding. Says I've gotten old.

(90,624 posts)Singing his squeaky little song like mad. Suddenly as he whirled away I saw the exquisite ruby flash of his throat, and was overcome. This was the first time in my life I've actually seen that fire.
On another day the same twig hosted a mockingbird claiming his territory, occasionally flinging himself high into the air in ecstasy, coming to land on the same twig.
Such joy.
Nice to see you again, Solly Mack. Be well.

(31,381 posts)Moving is a major PITA. Hope you are settling in, getting rid of the boxes, finding a place for everything, and
happy to see that the birds are going to LOVE having you live there.
Love to you, too!

(90,762 posts)I do hate unpacking.

(24,544 posts)...life is good again! I hope you get unpacked and settled soon. It is much more fun to relax with the birds and bugs than do those mundane but arduous chores!
Please share pix of your hummer friendly garden. It sounds delightful.
Solly Mack
(90,762 posts)Thanks. It's nothing special, really. Just petunias, zinnias, and bee balm.Simple flowering plants hummers and butterflies both enjoy. Most of it is in hanging baskets that cover the deck, with a small watering hole for the birds. All dog-friendly for my babies.

(20,886 posts)I've missed you and your wonderful photos. Your garden sounds fabulous. I expect that we will see photos soon. I keep trying to make my garden more hummer friendly. But the plants in this area are very persnickety. "Shade? I don't do no stinkin' shade."

I bought all the stuff to make a hummer feeder at the local discounter (when it had a sale and it's sitting in a basket at my back door. I was going to google about when they are going to show up in NC. Now I'll just do it, though even though every thing else is a month ahead of time, I think it's a bit early for the hummers.
You've handled a lot, and now I think if at all possible you need to do something to fill your own needs. If you are full you can share, if you are empty there is nothing to give.
Solly Mack
(90,762 posts)Build it - they will come.

(31,381 posts)I always track them here, and put up the feeders when the trees are blooming. Sure enough, within a week or 10 days I start seeing the hummers.

I made fresh juice for the hummers before we came to the beach for a week. Home Sunday.
Mira
(22,380 posts)and I sincerely hope you feel the same way about it.
So very relaxing looking. At the moment I miss the ocean. Will have to work on that.

(31,381 posts)I just sent a letter to the editor of the News&Observer (Raleigh) on Monday morning, though, basically saying
that we in NC could mount a boycott of our own against HB 2 by taking our vacations out of state. I think this
may be the last time we come to Emerald Isle until that hateful bill is repealed or struck down by the courts.
And I know--at least the house we are renting this time--boycotting the beach will affect Republicans: we've already
had two robo phone calls from Trump on this rental house's land line asking for $$ to fund his campaign. I don't think
we'll answer their phone again.
I hope you find your way to the ocean soon!
I'm in the Alleghany Highlands of Va. (far western area, about 40 miles from the WV line. Saw my first hummer today! Thought it was a large bug or maybe a butterfly (there were lots of them, too). Anyway, it was definitely a hummer, so the feeders will go up tomorrow. This is the first day we've had decent weather-it's been chilly, windy, and rainy for weeks, with temps in the 50's and 60's during the day, but dropping down into the 40's and 50's at night. Hope you see them soon.
Mira
(22,380 posts)my humming bird feeder is up and awaiting company. I'm sure it is beautiful where you are. I am always aghast at the landscape of VA and WVA - hoping that the latter will have voted for Bernie today.

(22,380 posts)I am incredulous how they are holding up, these candidates. They pressure, the scrutiny, the fear of making a mistake that can hurt must be a terrible weight on them. Noticed I said the word "aghast" before, I think that was a wrong word to use. (German native here)
I meant something akin to "enthralled"

(90,762 posts)He lives at the watering hole. I changed up my ferns for Coral Bells and Bee Balm. I am putting the ferns in my shaded beds at the front of the house. After picking from a list of pet friendly plants at my vet's office, I double-checked with the ASPCA and they said my vet was wrong on several, to include the ferns I was using. Got to keep my dogs and the neighborhood cats safe.
It'll take another month of growth for the garden to really take shape. I'm hoping to get some better photos then.
I painted a bunch of river rocks various colors and I also painted the gnome.
You can see the bamboo and bee balm in the photo, as well as the moss.
In this one the Coral Bells are showing in the back.
Petunias w/ orange Adirondack chair background. I painted all my old patio furniture bright colors (blue, green, yellow, orange) - I wanted bold colors.
Thanks, again!!

(2,570 posts)It is so therapeutic. I like that you add Hand painted River Rocks.

However, Now i live in a apartment, so it is just Potted plants for me.

(9,474 posts)Saw my first hummer today. Will get the feeders up tomorrow and the camera ready, but not sure I'm fast enough to catch them! I have some flowers in bloom, mostly Irises, but the Peonies are just about to pop. I just planted them lasat year, but some of them are already 3.5ft high! Can't wait-they're so pretty and smell so nice. My niece got me a huge hanging basket of pink and white Fuschia and some lavender Lantana, so am hoping for many hummers and butterflies soon.
Nice to see you back. You've been missed! I'm looking forward to seeing more of your work.
