Some of the best pups around. I kept one for 9 years before he got really serious health issues. Still miss Beauregard.

5. They snort and snarf a lot, but their real problems are related to their joints, hips, etc.

They often develop pretty severe arthritis, etc.

They tend not to be the longest lived of dogs. We had to put Beau down at about 10 yrs. old.

Our Beauceron, on the other hand, is pushing 17, although her quality of life is declining and we will probably put her down before the end of the year.

One night she demanded to go outside, and never came back. Her let me out cry was more urgent that last time.

She goes out and lays down on a flagstone walkway, right in front of the back gate. It's a nice cool place in the heat, and I think she keeps an eye on the front yard from the gap under the gate. The last couple of months she has even been getting us up in the middle of the night to let her out.

No barking, just wants to go out.

Her hips and joints are going, and she has kidney problems. We feed her meds in hot dog pieces to help her along and she gets a special diet sculpted to her issues, but I think her time is coming.

I wish I had a photo of my childhood canine friend Brutus who was 1/2 boxer and 1/2 black lab. Now THERE was a beautiful dog! And I've never known a dog sweeter than he was.
