Related: About this forumMy weekend in Virginia and DC
Stayed fairly close to home this weekend but had a great time nonetheless. First, on Saturday, we visited a bastion of over-privilege--a palace on a mountaintop in Virginia. Yes, a palace...in Virginia. The place is made up almost entirely of marble so it was freezing inside. I didn't stay inside long, that's for sure but we've been invited back in the fall, so hopefully I'll get some better images from the interior then.
Entrance
From the "back yard"
The water tower (and medieval battlement?)
Stairs and painting
Marble stairs and tiffany stained glass window
Close-up stained glass window
Carriage in carriage house (that was the size of a small mansion--the carriage house, not the carriage)

Today I went into DC to finally visit the Newseum which I've been wanting to do for years. It was pretty cool, especially seeing the old newspapers for the 1500's up to now. I also got to see part of the Berlin wall, touch a part of the Berlin wall, photograph the antenna that was on top of the WTC, look inside the Unibomber's cabin and see some props for the Anchorman movie. Oh, and an armor-plated pick-up truck that was riddled with bullet holes from Sarajevo. They also showed a very touching short film about the reporter's that covered 9/11 as it was happening--brought my Brit friend to tears.
Anyway, on with the photos.
That place where the slackers "work" (taken from the terrace at the top of the Newseum building)
J. Edgar Hoover was onto me
A squirrel eating an unsalted almond just because (btw, squirrels will come when called in DC)
Some kids skateboarding (trying out the continuous auto-focus on the Olympus EM-5)
And now I'm off to bed because it was a very busy weekend. I hope you enjoy.

(9,314 posts)correct? I visited it when I was a kid. I knew it looked familiar but it took me awhile to place it since it was so long ago. I need to go back and take some photos. Great photos...thanks for sharing.
