(8,991 posts)We stopped for overnights in coves and island towns. I found Tangier Island the most memorable. It is an old crabbing community of about 700 whose island is slowly sinking into the bay.

(8,991 posts)Tangier Island has been sinking for years and climate change isn't helping a bit.
It's a strange place. I saw a guy with a ninja motorcycle (why it was on the island is beyond me) riding with a 3 year old (my guess) in his lap and a woman riding a bicycle with a 4 or so year old girl riding in the basket. It really is like going back in time. The graves all stick out above ground and some of the homes get water under them at high tide. They are trying to convince the politicians to spend money to save the island but I think most feel it's a lost cause and a waste of money. It is also a very conservative/religious place so there is some irony that they want taxpayers to save them.

(24,031 posts)and even though I moved from there 50 years ago as a child, I could still tell the location from the pictures. Thanks for sharing them and making me homesick.

(24,031 posts)We left there (after 100 years) in 1957. I still like to visit there, and even though I've lived in California for over 50 years, I have a Baltimore accent about 30 minutes after I get off the plane there.

(14,879 posts)funny...I don't really find it funny at all.
My apologies for putting as damper on your humor, but you apparently have not been in a boating crisis.

(8,991 posts)The only way to get around the island is by golf cart and these kids were chasing after us as we drove away. I love the joy on their faces.

(14,040 posts)and over to Fort Carroll... I was out at Ft. Armistead today gazing longingly at Ft. Carroll wishing I had access to a boat and repelling/climbing gear.
Lovely photos, BTW. I especially like #5. Those kids look like they're having so much fun.

(5,946 posts)It was one thing my husband and I loved to do together. Although he would hog all the shade while I would have to apply tons of SPF. So many great stops and so relaxing, not rocky like sailing Long Island and Massacheusetts, power boat bullies like in The Barneget or Florida.
And the crab dinners - yum.

(8,991 posts)into a cove or town. If you get down near Crisfield the dock rates are cheap. Only $.50 per foot and the marina is nice which is run by the MD Dept of Natural Resources. Usually the rates are $1.50/ft or more for a slip.
I must say that I always find shade the most elusive thing on a hot sunny day. The only downside is that after a hot day sailing jumping into the water full of nettles isn't very appetizing.
