>>>>--------> Contest PHOTO Sizes <-------<<<<

Last edited Fri Feb 22, 2013, 04:55 PM - Edit history (2)

The winter contest will start on March 1st and I was ask about file size again. We have discussed it a few times without really changing from the 800 pixels on the longest side 200 kb file size. It might be time to increase both by a little bit so decided to do a poll on some reasonable increases. Please add comments either way but especially if you have a problem with bigger sizes. I really don't want to leave anyone out because they have a slower internet or their camera doesn't take bigger file sized photos. TY

1. An increase in both might be reasonable.

1500 pixels might be a bit large and require unwanted scrolling.

The photo forums I do uploads at tend to be 1200 pixels @ 300 kb.

3. 1200/300

1024/638

More interested in a larger file size than I am in larger dimensions.

6. I think we need at least 250 file size

But I wanted the dimensions 800 by 600 so I voted for that.

7. The photo I posted does seem a bit too large.

People do like photos they can view easily on their screens and not have to scroll to view.

4. 800x600 250 limit. I can live with a 300 limit, but keep the size 800x600.

5. exactly

We probably should vote on these separately.

My preference would be 800 by 600 with a 250 limit.

I voted for 800 by 600.

8. Computer/connection speeds are faster, but most of us don't have huge screens.

9. because of photography

I have an oversized high resolution computer screen.

I think that some here forget that a lot of people here have plain laptops.

10. monitors are still rectangular

Why not 1024 wide and/or 768 tall? Any 15" monitor will be able to handle that without scrolling. And the small bump up to 300 Kb would be relatively painless, too.

13. I'm leaning toward the contest staying at 800 pixels on

the longest side but allowing the file size to go to 300 kbs. I always say the longest side because of vertical photos though I usually took my verticals to 700 or 750 pixels because of scrolling. It is a case of trying to make it easier for those viewing multiple photos on one thread as we should keep those with the smallest monitors and slowest connections in mind. Life is hard enough it you are stuck with a slow connection and no reason for us to make it worse. We are more than welcome to post bigger photos in non-contest threads and can always do that. Adding I'd feel sorry for small screens but some are using their tablets and phones and just can't get beyond envy on that.

So how do you all feel about doing it this way? Part of my asking is I am going to go through and find as many versions of the contest rules & regs as I can and combine them into 1 post to pin for everyone to have easy access to them. Make life a tad bit easier for host and contestants.

14. Oh, that's great!

If you are compiling things maybe we can let that thread I pinned about the contests sink. I really appreciate this. That was sort of a placeholder until something more formal could be done.

Personally I would love to have larger size photos but I know a ton of people here that get by on used laptops that are several years old. I'd rather see a small photo on my screen than have a lot of people have to scroll to see them.

I have an iPhone but I truly cannot judge photos on that! Way too small. I tried it one time and it was ridiculous. I hope people are not voting from iPhones. But I don't use a tablet.

17. I really don't know what size mine are when I post them here.

I just upload to photobucket and let them take care of it.

18. I don't know enough to really speak intelligently about this because

I used to do the same thing with photobucket. Now I don't know how to proceed. Did you see this post of mine?

Should I ever win again and have to assist someone to re-size I won't be able to. Still clueless after all these years.
Guess that's how we learn new stuff.

20. What are you using

beyond photobucket on your photos? I can walk you through resizing in Photoshop but that would be the only one. Maybe we can get volunteer tutorials from those that use other programs...

22. Dearest CC

Until now I have used nothing except photobucket. I don't even understand or have a clue how many kb my photos are, or how to find out.
People ignorant like me should not be allowed in the contest

Unless some votes start coming in and knock me off the front runner status I'll be learning pretty darn quick shortly.
I do have photoshop, it's a cracked version, installed, I will figure it out.
If not I will keep howling over at photobucket, or nicely ask for help here. But, the student is ready, the teacher will appear.

Thanks for asking.

23. Use your photoshop! lol

What version? I will work up a tutorial for Photoshop. I don't think there has been much change in the resizing option. Also google Photoshop tutorials, you can find lots of neat things to do with it. With your artistic ways you would find a treasure trove of things to do with it.

19. I'm not sure how to do it in Paint Shop

anymore. Last time I used it was like version 5. But there is a way to do it in there. You all have me afraid to even go look in photobucket right now if they have screwed with it that much again.

21. Using PSP 13

From the menu, /image/resize

In the resize dialog:

turn on the advanced settings
turn on the Lock aspect ratio
turn on the resize all layers
The help file suggests "smart" or "weighted average" for the algorithm for reductions.

Ignore the Print Size settings.

In the Pixel Dimensions:
Set the drop-down to "pixels"
Put a new value (say 800) in the bigger number at "new" column.
Press OK.

Afterwords, you will need to do a final round of sharpening due to resizing the image.

24. I see the point of a limit on image dimensions, but not so much a limit on file size

First, a limit on dimensions is going to inherently limit file size. A 1200 x 800 image is usually going to have a smaller file size than a 1600 x 1200 image, for example, but there will be exceptions. A very colorful image will require a larger file than an image without as many colors. If I have have an image to submit which is of the specified dimensions but the file size happens to be a little large my only option would be to use more compression, at some point that's going to cut into the quality of the viewed image.

My suggestion would be to agree on a dimensional limit, agree that images will be jpg's, and leave it at that. I participate in a couple of dedicated photography forums and they both do exactly that, they set a dimensional limit for posted photos and that's it.

25. I prefer a smaller image

.
.
.

think of laptops

a few of us have them, ergo small screens

It's a pain sometimes to scroll up and down, left and right to see the whole image

maybe there is a way that the poster can include a link/thumbnail to a larger image?

I DO like large images for saving, but smaller ones be handier for viewing on a laptop
