Introducing Discussionist: A new forum by the creators of DU

Mon Feb 18, 2013, 06:20 PM

Two photos with musical instruments

both of which have already been posted here before. I wanted to share them again anyway, given the theme of this month's contest.

The first one is of a double bass and a theorbo, and was taken in the orchestra pit of the Théâtre des Champs Elysées in Paris.

The second one was taken outside of a shop near the Place des Vosges, also in Paris.

3. You remember how I flipped out over the second one.

Surely you do. I was rhapsodic. Now I can save it and look at it every now and then. I already have a file with your name on it, because of the photos you kindly took for me in my childhood stomping grounds in Vienna.
I wish you had entered the contest. Next time when I ask will you do it?????????????????

7. Yes, I do remember.

You are always very kind, generous and supportive with your comments.

I'm going to forever be reluctant to enter because of the hosting duties required of the winner. It's not that I'm so confident of my abilities, mind you, but I did manage to win once, and haven't forgotten how you took over for me.

Since my keeping up with DU is sometimes quite sporadic, it's stressful to expose myself to that kind of responsibility.

8. There's probably one in that shop somewhere.

And don't forget the lirone, a weird 17th century instrument that was used a lot in Rome. It has a very flat bridge, which enables four strings to be bowed simultaneously. Because of this and its unusual timbre, we jokingly call it the "Hoover".

Hence, this photoshop job:

Here's another photo of the theorbo-just to give you a better idea of the size of the damn thing.

I'm going to have to Google theorbo. I've gotta hear how it sounds now.
