TCM Schedule for Friday, August 28, 2015 -- Summer Under The Stars - Ingrid Bergman

Today's Star is the beautifully talented Ingrid Bergman, who is second only to Katharine Hepburn in acting Oscars. Bergman won three, for Best Actress in a Leading Role -- For Whom The Bell Tolls (1943) and Anastasia (1956), and Best Actress in a Supporting Role -- Murder On The Orient Express (1974). Enjoy!

6:00 AM -- Dr. Jekyll And Mr. Hyde (1941)
A scientist's investigations into the nature of good and evil turn him into a murderous monster.
Dir: Victor Fleming
Cast: Spencer Tracy, Ingrid Bergman, Lana Turner
BW-113 mins, CC,

Nominated for Oscars for Best Cinematography, Black-and-White -- Joseph Ruttenberg, Best Film Editing -- Harold F. Kress, and Best Music, Scoring of a Dramatic Picture -- Franz Waxman

The studio had originally cast Ingrid Bergman in the aristocratic Beatrix Emery role and Lana Turner in the lower-class barmaid Ivy Peterson role. Bergman felt the role of Ivy was more challenging and persuaded the producers to switch roles with Turner.

8:00 AM -- Under Capricorn (1949)
Newly arrived in Australia, a man discovers his childhood love is now an alcoholic.
Dir: Alfred Hitchcock
Cast: Ingrid Bergman, Joseph Cotten, Michael Wilding
C-117 mins, CC,

According to Michael Wilding's autobiography "The Wilding Way", on one occasion while Ingrid Bergman and Michael Wilding were in the middle of a passionate love scene Hitchcock let out a howl of pain, then in the most gentle tone said "Please move the camera a little to the right. You have just run over my foot." The X-ray revealed later that the camera's weight had broken Hitchcock's big toe.

10:00 AM -- Stromboli (1950)
A refugee marries a Sicilian fisherman but can't cope with the harshness of her new life.
Dir: Roberto Rossellini
Cast: Ingrid Bergman, Mario Vitale, Renzo Cesana
BW-107 mins, CC,

During production of this film, Ingrid Bergman entered into an extra-marital affair with Roberto Rossellini and became pregnant. The resulting scandal in America effectively blacklisted her from the North American movie market and she was even condemned by politicians and religious figures. She was finally forgiven and welcomed back to America upon the success of Anastasia (1956), but her Hollywood career was temporarily ended by this movie.

11:45 AM -- Journey to Italy (1955)
A married couple seek insight and direction within their relationship in Italy.
Dir: Roberto Rossellini
Cast: Ingrid Bergman, George Sanders,
BW-83 mins,

Filmed in Naples.

1:15 PM -- Fear (1954)
The wife of a prominent scientist is blackmailed after her extramarital affair is discovered.
Dir: Roberto Rossellini
Cast: Ingrid Bergman, Mathias Wieman, Renate Mannhardt
BW-79 mins,

The last film Roberto Rossellini and Ingrid Bergman made together before their divorce in 1957.

2:45 PM -- Elena and Her Men (1956)
A countess falls in love with a Parisian general, but another officer pines for her.
Dir: Jean Renoir
Cast: Ingrid Bergman, Mel Ferrer, Jean Marais
C-98 mins,

Audrey Hepburn did not want to be separated from her husband Mel Ferrer while she was making Funny Face (1957), so filming of the Paris scenes in that film were timed to coincide with Ferrer's filming for this film.

4:30 PM -- From The Mixed-Up Files of Mrs. Basil E. Frankweiler (1973)
Two runaways take refuge in the Metropolitan Museum of Art.
Dir: Fielder Cook
Cast: Ingrid Bergman, Sally Prager, Johnny Doran
C-105 mins,

Based on novel by E. L. Konigsburg (aka Elaine Shirle Lobl).

6:15 PM -- Autumn Sonata (1978)
A concert pianist faces the daughters she's neglected for years.
Dir: Ingmar Bergman
Cast: Ingrid Bergman, Liv Ullmann, Lena Nyman
C-94 mins,

Nominated for Oscars for Best Actress in a Leading Role -- Ingrid Bergman, and Best Writing, Screenplay Written Directly for the Screen -- Ingmar Bergman

The film struck very close to home for Ingrid Bergman to the extent that she was quite shocked when she read the screenplay for the first time. It deals with a self-centered artist who leaves her children in their formative years to go off and pursue her career. During the late 40s, Bergman herself became a cause celebre by abandoning her family to run off with Italian film director, Roberto Rossellini.

TCM PRIMETIME - WHAT'S ON TONIGHT: SUMMER UNDER THE STARS: INGRID BERGMAN

8:00 PM -- Casablanca (1942)
An American saloon owner in North Africa is drawn into World War II when his lost love turns up.
Dir: Michael Curtiz
Cast: Humphrey Bogart, Ingrid Bergman, Paul Henreid
BW-103 mins, CC,

Won Oscars for Best Director -- Michael Curtiz, Best Writing, Screenplay -- Julius J. Epstein, Philip G. Epstein and Howard Koch, and Best Picture

Nominated for Oscars for Best Actor in a Leading Role -- Humphrey Bogart, Best Actor in a Supporting Role -- Claude Rains, Best Cinematography, Black-and-White -- Arthur Edeson, Best Film Editing -- Owen Marks, and Best Music, Scoring of a Dramatic or Comedy Picture -- Max Steiner

The difference in height between Humphrey Bogart and Ingrid Bergman changes throughout the film. This is because Bergman was actually a few inches taller than Bogart, though to create the illusion that it was vice versa, Michael Curtiz had Bogart stand on boxes and sit on pillows in some shots, or had Bergman slouch down (as evident when she sits on the couch in the "franc for your thoughts" scene).

10:00 PM -- Gaslight (1944)
A newlywed fears she's going mad when strange things start happening at the family mansion.
Dir: George Cukor
Cast: Charles Boyer, Ingrid Bergman, Joseph Cotten
BW-114 mins, CC,

Won Oscars for Best Actress in a Leading Role -- Ingrid Bergman, and Best Art Direction-Interior Decoration, Black-and-White -- Cedric Gibbons, William Ferrari, Edwin B. Willis and Paul Huldschinsky

Nominated for Oscars for Best Actor in a Leading Role -- Charles Boyer, Best Actress in a Supporting Role -- Angela Lansbury, Best Writing, Screenplay -- John L. Balderston, Walter Reisch and John Van Druten, Best Cinematography, Black-and-White -- Joseph Ruttenberg, and Best Picture

The first time Ingrid Bergman met Charles Boyer was the day they shot the scene where they meet at a train station and kiss passionately. Boyer was the same height as Bergman, and in order for him to seem taller, he had to stand on a box, which she kept inadvertently kicking as she ran into the scene. Boyer also wore shoes and boots with 2-inch heels throughout the movie.

12:00 AM -- Europa '51 (1952)
When a well-off woman loses her son, her recovery confronts her with the problems of the less fortunate.
Dir: Roberto Rossellini
Cast: Ingrid Bergman, Alexander Knox, Ettore Giannini
BW-110 mins,

The square Irene and Andrea drive to is the Campodoglio in Rome. The equestrian statue is of Marcus Aurelius, emperor and stoic philosopher.

2:00 AM -- Rage In Heaven (1941)
A jealous man plots to fake his death and incriminate his wife's suspected lover.
Dir: W. S. Van Dyke II
Cast: Robert Montgomery, Ingrid Bergman, George Sanders
BW-85 mins, CC,

W.S. Van Dyke took over the direction of the movie from Robert B. Sinclair, who became ill shortly after shooting began. Van Dyke was in the Marines, but was granted a 14-day leave to finish the picture. Neither Sinclair nor Van Dyke was available for retakes, which were then directed by Richard Thorpe.

3:30 AM -- Saratoga Trunk (1945)
A woman with a past returns to 19th-century New Orleans for revenge.
Dir: Sam Wood
Cast: Gary Cooper, Ingrid Bergman, Flora Robson
BW-135 mins, CC,

Nominated for an Oscar for Best Actress in a Supporting Role -- Flora Robson

The word "Trunk" refers to a railroad's main line - a 'trunk' line - in this case, between Albany and Binghamton, New York on the Delaware and Hudson.
