The United Steel Workers say Goodyears decision to build a new plant in Mexico is troubling and disappointing but not surprising. USW President Leo Gerard says the union and the rank and file workers have been willing partners at Goodyear and have worked hard to turn the company around. Gerard says the union workers efforts have significantly contributed to the return of prosperity at Goodyears North American operations. The USW started discussions with Goodyear about maximizing investment in U.S. plants when it became clear they were building the Mexican plant. U.S. demand is outpacing supply for Goddyear tires, but rather than put the new plant where the demand is Goodyear went to Mexico to supply the U.S. market.
