Any thoughts on having a host for this group?

Skinner just put up a thread on the process here: http://www.democraticunderground.com/1013434 We don't need to have them, but in case of aggravated red-baiting, we might want to have a few folks around to decide what extent we want to keep this a "safe haven". I don't know how much traffic we will get, but I think there is some potential for building up the group here. Anyway, what say you comrades?

2. *blush*

I just read in Meta that some folks are still having problems getting into DU3. I'll wait a bit and see if there are any others who want to be the main host. They might show up late and not be happy that the spot got grabbed without consensus. I am interested though!

3. Folks could talk about which hours they are on here as well -

you might want a couple people who don't post here at the same time just to keep an eye on things. Shouldn't be that much in this group - it was pretty quiet during the testing period but 50 people did subscribe so there are folks who will read.

It's late now so I'm off, but I'll be looking for interesting stories to bring here

4. Yay!!

I'm excited about this! I'll check in the am to see if anyone else posted yay or nay. I'm probably up the latest being in the Bay Area, but that means I lag in the morning. Good idea about getting coverage per time zones. 50 people subscribed, that is great!

6. Thank you dixiegrrrl!

There were some others around this week posting, I want to make sure that they see this before I plunge. Skinner just posted the guidelines to apply an hour ago and there's no hurry really. I'm stoked to hear that you are going to be hanging around this forum a lot!

7. I throw my support behind Starry Messenger.

She's one of the most informative posters on DU and I love her posts. I can't think of any people better for the job, and only a few that would be as good.

10. Sorry. That's a problem of mine.

I never read profiles and I make the stupid mistake of assuming people's gender based off username or avatars. I'm sorry. Editing my post now.

8. My thoughts on a GH

I've put myself up for candidacy on one of the other groups (I'm not going to nominate myself for SocProg, BTW), and one of my arguments was that all the groups should at least start with a host, if only to help integrate the latecomers, and to establish the unwritten boundaries of the group. After all, we're not Anarchists

11. Good thoughts OA!

I posted my intentions to apply in Skinner's thread on the new group hosts thread he put up tonight. I'm a Marxist-Leninist, but I have a soft-spot for anarchists too, being an old punk rocker of yore. Hopefully I can keep up in my orthopedic Doc Martens.

I haven't really thought about boundaries for the group, though I imagine that most here are looking for systems alternative to capitalism, are pro-worker and are interested in Occupy and other anti-establishment grassroots movement politics. I'm looking forward to getting to know people interested in this group and their thoughts!

14. Great!

I like that you're well versed in theory, a union member, and have belonged to DU for quite awhile so you know lots of folks. Plus you're my friend so there ya go - uber qualified.

We should have some good variety in this group.

18. Thanks TBF, that means a lot to me.

I'm glad we are friends too. I'd love to see this place with lots of material. I think we'll have a great group! I hope lurkers will feel encouraged to post things that they find even if they are new to learning about socialism. I know when I was first starting out, I felt intimidated because there seemed like a lot of people knew so much. I hope this can be a place where noobs can feel comfortable too.

So hop in lurkers!

but I will bring some anarchist material from time to time to keep things interesting. I'm a big fan of Emma Goldman

Although both seem to be Marxist-Leninists, I haven't gotten any negative feedback from them about my Bolshevik-Leninism. Unlike other boards.

I'm on here a fair amount, but there's not a set time for it, but I'll help when I can.

I do think that we ought to be open to all forms of socialistic thinking. At this point in the struggle, the democracy aspect is more important than the centralism aspect.

17. Your support means a lot to me socialist_n_TN

Thank you, I was hoping you'd check in this morning. If anyone likes, they can also become a co-host, I think we can have up to 20 (?) so once we get this party started, other people can help too. Practically anyone who wants to could potentially co-host in here if they are interested in the subject. I would love to see a person or persons from each tendency take a spot! Or just socialist-curious!

I agree totally about this point in the struggle, I would love to see people just bringing ideas and exploring even if this is their first time to socialism or Marxism or what have you. With Occupy happening, people are questioning the system and are tired of "experts" finger-wagging them and suppressing ideas. I like the populist approach that Billy Bragg for example takes, bringing people in, not shutting people out. Does that sound ok? I know I tend to be a nerd about ML and try to step back and remember what I was thinking when I was first coming to all of this.

20. Well, I guess I could take the Bolshevik-Leninist tendency spot

I'm sure there are other philosophical Trotskyists around, but I don't know if any of them are "card carrying" Trots, whereas I am a dues paying member of a Trotskyist group.

And I agree that we should be pretty open at this point. A big tent of anticapitalist or even just anti-austerity thinking would be best. We've got to do what we can to raise class consciousness and MOST importantly, support things that actually HELP the working class.

Like I said you are fine with me as first host.

I haven't heard anything from Skinner yet, I'm sure he and the guys are code-wrangling like mad today. If he approves me (or when) I'll pop you in. TBF has said she's willing to co-host too, and I appreciate the help! White_wolf if you see this, let us know if you are interested!

19. thanks my friend

I am just learning and don't really know what to call myself other than I do like Marxist theory and I'm anti-authoritarian. I'll work with anyone who wants to get past capitalism and evolve to a socialist system that remains as democratic as possible. I'm not into dictatorships or fascism. I need to read more about Trotsky to be honest, I have really focused more on feminist authors like Goldman. Starry will do great and we'll all help her out.

25. Here is a link to a short article on woman's issues.

It was published by the International Marxist Tendency, which is a Trotskyist group based on Ted Grant's ideas. http://www.socialistappeal.org/faq/feminism.html
