This is probably not what you're asking for (and I don't know if I'd call it essential anyway) but I just read Babbitt by Sinclair Lewis and thought it was great. I guess I'd call it a fictional expose on the beginnings/rise of the modern American bourgeois.

I'd enjoy some "must read" suggestions from members of this group, myself.
