The vodka thread got me thinking about my favorite budget liquors, and by budget I don't mean low quality. I like a $60+ bottle of booze as much as the next guy, but there's just something about a really good bottle of booze in the $20-25 range, especially since I go through at least one bottle per month. I drink most of my booze neat, so it has to taste good or at least it can't be total shit. My recommendations here are based on liquor that I've tried because they were on sale.
Vodka:
There's really no reason to pay a lot for a bottle of vodka because there's so many great vodkas out there which aren't expensive. Thank the Russians, Ukrainians, and Slavs for flooding the market with great vodka that's not expensive. I could post an extensive list here, but if I were to narrow it down to a couple, here's my picks for quality, availability, and value:
Titos
Stoli
Whiskey:
I like wheated American whiskeys. That's not to say there aren't some great Scotch/Irish whiskeys out there, but I just prefer American whiskeys although I always keep a bottle of Jameson on hand for Irish coffee. When it comes to American whiskeys, I find really expensive bottles are hit and miss. Some I find really good, many I can't stand. It's not really that much different with cheaper whiskeys, it's just that you expect greatness from an expensive bottle and I haven't always found that to be the case.
Maker's Mark
Weller 12 year
Brandy:
I have one interesting choice here which I found recently. It's an American apple brandy made by Laird. Normally I'm a cognac drinker when it comes to brandy. The caramel flavor is really easy to distinguish (perhaps I'm just a sucker for caramel).
Laird's 7 1/2 Apple Brandy
Courvoisier VS
Tequila:
One of the few things I miss about living in El Paso was I could go across the border and get really great Tequila for a really great price. I drank a lot of Tequila back in those days because all my friends there did. I don't drink so much anymore, but when I do there's only one I have gone to recently. I'm sure there are many other good values out there.

(55,007 posts)dispite the horror that is regular Cuervo, the Traditional is quite drinkable (when first opened hee hee)
I don't drink much other hard liquor, maybe a little rum or gin as a cocktail so I tend to go with bacardi and tanqueray???

... was some pretty decent tequila (long before the tequila boom that's still happening).

We decided to go to a really nice place with an AMAZING amount of top-shelf liquors
behind the bar (maybe a coupla dozen scotches and bourbons and rums, etc.) and
the ONLY tequila they had was the generic CHEAP-ass well tequila (not even Cuervo
level -- it was Pepe Lopez or something).
.
We all downed one shot and several of us seriously almost hurled. We pointed to the
impressive stocks of other liquors and asked WTF. It was an English pub atmosphere
(though that was no excuse) and the bartender looked at us and actually sniffed a
little bit and said, very properly... "We really don't like to ENCOURAGE tequila drinking
here."

Funniest thing? We all understood and it didn't piss us off in the least.

(32,080 posts)It's made of 100% blue agave, and it comes in Silver and Reposado. IIRC, it's in the same range as the Cuervo Tradicional. I have only tried the Reposado. I recommend it. It's good enough for sipping, IMO, although I don't really have a sophisticated palate when it comes to tequila.
Major Nikon
(36,827 posts)I found them to be a good value. I haven't tried their reposado, but probably should.
GoCubsGo
(32,080 posts)The "Blue" is their low end 100% blue agave. They also have the "Hornitos", which is a little more expensive, and a high-end sipping Reposado. I don't know what is the difference between the Blue and the Hornitos.
Major Nikon
(36,827 posts)Sure there are a lot of people who like it and I'm not knocking them, but regular Cuervo is not for me. Cuervo Reposado is different. There are a lot of big brands which buy out smaller labels, so you can't really go by the big name when it comes to their top shelf products. Jim Beam owns Courvoisier for Christ's sake.
OriginalGeek
(12,132 posts)regular Cuervo has some grain alcohol and coloring in it.
I wouldn't even consider it tequila unless it specifically says 100% agave.
is JC's top shelf 100% agave?

(12,132 posts)That's good Polish Potato vodka. And only about 15 bucks for a fifth. (18 for the gift set with 2 neato squarish Luksusowa shot glasses)
OP said he wasn't into scotch however some others might be interested in going just a little higher into the mid 30$ range and pick up a bottle of Balvenie Double Wood. 12 yo single malt that gets aged in a regular cask and then transferred to sherried cask and it smooths it out really nicely.
hifiguy
(33,688 posts)which is about $11/liter. Made in Poland, it's very clean and as flavorless as Grey Goose.

In a grocery store one Christmas season, I found a display of 12-year-old
bottles of The Macallan (my personal favorite) with two nice rocks glasses
for $14.95 (I think normal price at the time was about $45 -- JUST for the
bottle itself). I bought all eight gift boxes.
.
Now, used to be when I'd go out drinking, I had a capacity that allowed me
to drink up to a whole bottle of Scotch and still function, however a bottle
at home might literally last me a year or two (I've never been a home-drinker).
So, for the next couple of years, my really CLOSE friends were always amazed
at the quality of the gifts I would give them.

I mean I have a job, I have taste and there are some things I won't scimp on. If I'm going to buy cheap tequila I'm still going to get Don Patron or Herradura Tequila but in the blanco (which is around $35).

Come to think of it, maybe you don't.

(32,080 posts)Bourbon--Jim Beam. For mixing, I think it's just fine. Also great when you have a cold, as is Southern Comfort.
Brandy--Christian Brothers is okay. Courvoisier VS is also really good. I love their VSOP for special occasions. My mom got me into brandy. I loved it when she'd come to visit, because she'd buy a bottle, and then leave what she didn't drink.
Rum--Cruzan.
Coconut rum--Whatever is on sale. I don't care. I love it all.
Tequila--As I mentioned above, Sauza Blue Reposado. Looking forward to trying their Blue "Silver" one of these days.
I don't have any preferences for budget vodka or gin. The stuff I like is all high-end, as I don't drink it all that much..

(5,128 posts)Tito's is a perfect vodka for you.
I consider Maker's more of a Bourbon, but is what you should expect. I like Evan Williams.
You should try Forty Creek. Amazing smooth almost honeyed whiskey, excellent neat.
Now the disqualifier: I like Cuervo Silver just fine.
LynneSin
(95,337 posts)That good top shelf tequila is not meant for guzzling but savoring like an after dinner drink.
At good restaurants, when others are enjoying their after dinner brandies or whiskeys, I'll order my Anejo Tequila - preferably Herradura but Don Patron is a good backup choice.
Major Nikon
(36,827 posts)In general, I don't care for Canadian whiskeys. At least I haven't found one that I do like. This may be because I tend to not like rye whiskeys, and I think most Canadian whiskeys are made with it. I do lean towards bourbons, but not every one I like is a bourbon. I like some Tennessee whiskeys as well.

(20,176 posts)(before I stopped drinking...it's still what I stock the home-bar with though.)
It's cheap for a ultrapremium vodka, it's organic, potato-derived, not filtered with bone-char or isenglass, it's made in Pittsburgh of all places, the company is very focused on being green and sustainable. It's tastes good very-cold without an overpowering taste or nose...and that's all I ask for from a vodka. Every before that was a bonus.
Spirit Journal agreed rating it #22 of 140 Top Five-star Spirits in the World (Spirit Journal, June 2011) ahead of such stalwarts as Belvidere, Stoli or Grey Goose and upstarts like Tito's.

(4,026 posts)Night Train has a certain appeal if you're just lookin' for a quick, cheap buzz that probably won't kill ya' - at least not right away. Look for it in the convenience store booze cooler close to where that weird guy is standing who looks like he might have a .45 tucked in his belt under his T-shirt.

(56,912 posts)really nice budget.
Major Nikon
(36,827 posts)Some a little less, some a little more, but the average is about $20 per bottle(I almost never buy booze unless it's on sale, and when it's on sale I often stock up). If I were to guess, I probably go through about 20 bottles or so a year. That makes my annual budget around $400 per year which is occassionally busted if I splurge for a $60 bottle(rarely). Not bad compared to most other vices, and everyone should have at least one vice.

(7,208 posts)I have been a malt liquor afficianado for many years.
Olde English 800, Colt 45, and Schlitz are all medium octane but they don't taste like shit.
Mickey's is medium octane but it has a bad aftertaste.
Steel Reserve 211 is OK, clocking in at 8.1% it will usually get the job done with two 24 ounce cans.
The high octane malt liquors all taste like dog ass, so you had better drink 'em cold and quick. After 3 cans of Earthquake, dog ass probably doesn't sound too bad.
