You opened the door to other genres, so I'm naming more:
Classical: Andres Segovia and Sharon Isbin
Jazz: Jim Hall, Pat Metheny, Joe Pass, Al Di Meola and Charlie Byrd
Bluegrass: Earl Scruggs, Steve Martin (Banjo) and Alison Krauss
I don't particularly care for Country and I know there are great players but I won't hear them.

(16,855 posts)Dwayne Allman....
Clapton regarded him as one of the best he'd ever heard. "Layla" is widely regarded as one of the top rock songs of all time...that iconic lead guitar that highlights the song and goes on to play a love serenade with the piano at the end?? That's Allman...not Clapton!

After I read that and listened to Layla with fresh ears, I can easily hear Gregg Allman singing it as an Allman Brothers song.

Seen him a couple of times, and he always looks like he's having the time of his life on stage. Very personable; we had a meet-n-greet with him a few months ago, and he was a very warm individual, interested in what we all had to say. Then he went out on the stage and gave a knockout performance.

I saw Tommy shortly before he died, Winterland.
How do I not know about this brother of his, drummer? Does he play guitar also or drums only?

There are so many incredible guitarists playing now. So many. Luther Dickinson, the guys from Umphreys McGee, Chuck Garvey from MOE, Lukas Nelson (Willie's kid) Dan LEBo from ALO, Billy Nershi from String Cheese Incident. So many more too.

(22,976 posts)Ry Cooder has played guitar since he was 4 (not a typo) years old, and it shows. He's been a go-to studio and performing sideman for The Rolling Stones, Captain Beefheart, Taj Mahal, Randy Newman, and Ali Farka Toure to name a few. He has immersed himself in the scholarship of American Roots music, and he has a mastery of many world genres as well. He also plays mandolin.
Here, in the early 1970s, he plays an acoustic bottleneck blues version of Woody Guthrie's "Vigilante Man":

(57,372 posts)Thanks for the great tune. If I ever knew the name of that, I had forgotten it years ago.
I'm sure someone has already suggested Link Wray in this thread, but it's getting so big I can't tell. If Duane Eddy is here, then Link Wray must be too.
While searching YouTube for Roy Clark tunes, I came across videos of a guy wearing a cowboy hat playing a combination steel guitar and six-string electric. I'll see if I can find them again.
Is this a great country or what?
Thanks again.
