Can I say 'That was stupid'?

CBS This Morning (TV show) had a story of an American woman and her Canadian husband who are being held captive in Afghanistan by a faction of the Taliban.

They had gone to Afghanistan in 2012 to go back packing, and chose “an unstable” area of the country in which to back pack.
What could possibly go wrong?

I’m reminded of a news story a year or two ago about Iranian troops taking captive some people who had gone back packing along the Iraq/Iranian border.
Again, what could possibly go wrong?

Is that she was also quite pregnant at the time. She has now had two kids while in captivity.

And she made it clear that her kids saw her "defiled."
