Trains

First time on train in US in 40 years. Boy, that makes me sound like an old fart. Amtrak from Vermont to DC.

Slight delay. Comfy. Not exactly the bullet train but that's okay. Half the price of air fare and only a few hours longer overall.

Didn't think to bring my own food. Stupid. Loudly food choices on board. And the conductor says don't even bother trying to get off in new haven or New York to get food. Will lose seat.

So far, so good. Won't have much need for future train travel but so far glad I chose this option.

1. We just rode Amtrak's Coast Starlight from Los Angeles to Seattle in early August.

It was a very enjoyable ride. Overnight. Food wasn't that great--our ticket included all meals since we had a bedroom--
but the scenery was spectacular.

We've ridden the train from here in Raleigh/Durham area (we use the Cary station) to DC several times. We've also done the train from here
to NY, but it's a much longer ride and we can get direct flights to NY that only take less than 90 minutes. The scenery between DC and NY is not very
interesting.

3. Yes, we had overcast near the Pacific coast in California, too.

But we lived in SoCal for 23 years so we know what the coast looks like. I had never been in Oregon or Washington, and that scenery was gorgeous.

A couple favorite shots out the train window:

I have to give a shout out to trusty elf for photoshop skills used to remove a power line from that photo of Mt. Shasta.
