Well, that was different.

I was just walking through the Walmart parking lot (yeah, I use it sometimes, it's the closest store when I'm walking) and passed two kind of grungy hunter types as they were loading cases of beer into their pickup. They were discussing going to the library and picking up some books on plate tectonics and astronomy.

I didn't get any context, just overheard a friendly discussion between them as I passed by.

They were hoping for an earthquake to spook the deer out of hiding, and a full moon for better aim.

In the event of a near miss, how massive and how close would an asteroid or comet need to be to have a noticeable effect on Earth's plate tectonics?

Now I need to go to the library.

Thanks a lot.

... a drunken stargazing excursion - an earthquake.

They're just being careful, I guess.
