Takei had enough negative experiences inside the Hollywood closet, he says, and strongly feels a character who came of age in the 23rd century would never find his way inside one.


Combined with the original series, this decision does have the effect of making it sound like Sulu has come out of the closet. A better approach would have been to retcon Sulu as bisexual, or just use Takei's idea and create a character that is gay right from the start.

that it probably would have been better if they just created a new character that was gay. I think there was also passing mention of Sulu having a wife & child in one of the movies
